CYCLE 2 – SPRING
COLLABORATIVE SEED GRANTS

The SLU – MO S&T collaborative seed grants:
• Support promising projects that require interdisciplinary interaction and complementary expertise between both institutions
• Provide support to perform pilot activities that have strong potential to attract external research funding.
DEADLINE
Applications must be received by March 1, 2025 at 5:00 P.M. CST.
AWARD DETAILS
• Period of Performance is from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026
• Projects should be accomplished within a year
• Awardees must present their findings in the next collaborative Spring meeting
• Up to $20,000 may be requested for this award.
Eligibility
• Multi-PI application describing a new project with high likelihood of extramural funding.
• PI: Full-time faculty members (tenure and non-tenure track) appointed at the School of
Medicine at Saint Louis University and Missouri S&T
• PIs from both institutions should bring complementary and integrated expertise to the project
• PIs from both institutions may submit only one application per application cycle
APPLICATION FORMAT
1. LAY ABSTRACT – 300-word limit, written for a general audience.
2. COVER LETTER (1-page limit) - Justify submission of the MPI research project in the context of existing research support and describe a path to extramural funding for the proposed project.
3. RESEARCH PROPOSAL – 4-page limit.
Research Proposal - Please use sub-headings to delineate sections.
• Specific Aims
• Research Plan
• Significance and Impact of Research
• Role of each collaborator
• Timeline & Milestones
4. REFERENCE LIST – No page limit.
5. BUDGET AND JUSTIFICATION - 1-page limit.
Include a detailed, itemized budget. Provide a clear narrative description of how funds in each category will be used.
6. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION.
Submit biosketches for all PIs and Co-PIs using the NIH format.
BUDGETING GUIDELINES
Allowable Expenses
Research Expenses
• Expenses that are essential to the proposed project are allowed.
Salary and Fringe Benefits for SLU / MO S&T Faculty and Staff
• Salary is allowed only for non-key personnel.
• Salary Cap: The total amount of salary and fringe benefits is capped at $5,000/year per application.
Student Labor
Support for student is allowed for students that met the following criteria:
• Holds student status at SLU or MO S&T for the duration of the project
• Is in good academic standing
• Stipend Cap: The total amount of stipend is capped at $5,000/year per application.
Unallowable Expenses
The following are ineligible for support from the seed grant and should not be included in proposals:
• Indirect Costs
• Pre-award costs, i.e., any expenses incurred prior to the official start date of the seed grant award
• Tuition or fees
• Salary of Key Personnel with 9- or 12-month contracts
REVIEW PROCESS
Applications will be reviewed by an Internal Study Section appointed by SLU- SOM and MO S&T focused on innovation, and potential of extramural funding.
INSTITUTIONAL COMPLIANCE
Projects including human subjects, animals, hazardous materials, etc., must have appropriate approval(s), prior to the start of the project.
POST-AWARD TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Post-Award Administration
• PIs are required to oversee and approve all expenditures according to the approved seed grant budget.
• Seed grant awardees are expected to use funds according to the budgets submitted with their original proposals. All budget revisions require approval from designated individuals at SLU and MO S&T
• Funds that are not expended by the end of the project year must be returned.
Post-Award Progress Reports
• At the end of one year of performance (March 31, 2026), PIs must submit a report to Tara Maulood, tara.maulood@health.slu.edu; detailing progress and research products related to the received funding.
• Awardees must present their findings in the next Collaborative Spring meeting
