Application Deadline: November 15, 2023
The Award & Eligibility Criteria
The Andrew Carnegie Fellows Program provides philanthropic support to extraordinary scholars and writers for high-caliber research in the humanities and social sciences. In 2023, Carnegie Corporation of New York announced a new focus and theme: political polarization in the United States. This is characterized by, e.g., threats to free speech, the decline of civil discourse, and a lack of mutual understanding and collaboration. In combination, these factors fracture society, and ultimately undermine our democracy. The program’s goal is to help Americans understand how and why society has become so polarized and what can be done to strengthen the forces of cohesion.
Fellowships of $200,000 each are awarded annually to 30 senior and junior scholars, authors, journalists and public intellectuals. The funds support high-caliber research and writing and can be used for travel, hiring research assistants and sabbaticals. The funding is for a period of one or two years with the anticipated result of a book or major study.
To be eligible, SLU nominees must hold a Ph.D., or terminal degree.
Guidance for the Nomination Process
