Fields

SLU slots: up to 1 from each program (Medical Research or Science & Engineering)

Internal Deadline: May 1, 2024

Institutional Deadline: November 1, 2024

The W. M. Keck Foundation supports pioneering biological and physical science research and engineering, including the development of promising new technologies, instrumentation or methodologies. The median range for a request is $1.2M over 3 years. The investigator must have very strong rationale for any request over $1.2M.

Successful proposals must:

  • Make it patently clear what the breakthrough is - this is paramount

  • Demonstrate a high level of risk due to unconventional approaches or challenges to prevailing paradigms

  • Have potential for transformative impact such as the founding of a new field of research, enabling of new observations, or altering perception of a previously intractable problem

  • Focus on the distinctiveness of the concept, not the work to be pursued

  • Justify the need for private foundation support (the lack of preliminary data is not sufficient)

  • Demonstrate that W. M. Keck Foundation support is essential to the project’s success

Guidance for the Nomination Process

To be considered for SLU’s submissions, interested faculty should submit a brief abstract, a 2-3 page project summary, and a C.V. or biosketch through via SLU’s OpenWater tool by 5pm on May 1, 2024, here: https://slu.secure-platform.com/a/solicitations/162/home
